Elevator

An elevator is a type of machine that lifts or lowers using a single pulley, counterweightan object of a certain weight which helps balance the weight of cargo, and electric motor. The place for passengers is called the car, which is attached to one end of a cable. The other end of the cable is attached to the counterweight.*Macaulay, 1988

The car and counterweight both run on a set of rails, which helps limit movement to up-and-down directions. The cable is run through a single pulley, which uses the counterweight to balance the weight of the car with passengers.*Macaulay, 1988

An electric motor controls the pulley. The motor uses electricity to move the counterweight (and car), with the amount of power depending on the weight of passengers.*Macaulay, 1988
